I caught the last half or so of this movie, “Broken Flowers”, with Bill Murray. Obviously, spoilers from here on out.
About five seconds before it ended, my mom says “oh, is this going to be one of those movies where you don’t find out anything?”. And she was right. So if you don’t like those kinds of movies, just don’t watch it.
On the IMDB boards, there’s quite a few people saying “this is the worst movie ever!”, but to be fair, you do get those everywhere. But these people don’t understand the movie. Honestly, I don’t understand it either, but at least I don’t blame the film-makers for my stupidity!
Now, yes, I admit, this could potentially be a very boring movie. I did notice in the part that I saw that there was very little dialogue or music. Which was really really strange. But nice, because it was different.
However, lack of sound makes it boring, yes, it’s true. There were some shots that lingered on a little longer than needed. But you know, there was a point to this, as there is to EVERYTHING in movies. Now, in this movie and other “thinker” movies, they usually don’t explain these things to you. It’s up to you to “get” or “not get”. People like me who suck at English usually don’t get it. And there’s nothing wrong with that, except that you might do really bad at English like me, unless you somehow get really lucky like me.
I think the slowness of this movie could have been just showing how life truly is quite slow and mundane at times. Think of how many times you say “umm…” or “err…” or “uh…” or even just “…” when talking to someone. You don’t see this often in movies, do you? Because they try to stuff in as much dialogue as possible, and since they know what they’re going to say ahead of time, it goes a lot faster than in real life, right? So this movie just made it more real, more like real life.
Personally, I do like Hollywood Blockbuster movies. If I was ever a film-maker, I probably wouldn’t be doing these indie psychological movies. I’d be in it for the money. But that doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with this types of movies.
It’s just another genre, you know? Like personally, I’m not a big fan of horror movies. So I don’t rent horror movies! It’s as simple as that. If you don’t like movies that make you think, then don’t watch them.
But “oh, I didn’t know I’d have to think!”. Well, do your bloody research. Read IMDB. If you check the boards and see people saying “I don’t get it”, and you must get it, then this movie is not for you. So stop complaining about these so-called “bad movies” and just watch your Pixar and Will Ferrell movies.
Admittedly, I didn’t see the whole movie. But I’d still like to, even though I know I won’t figure it out. Because although I enjoy the movie-movies, I still like the thinkers every once in awhile.
Basically, what I’m trying to say, is don’t diss a movie just because you don’t get it. Just say “I don’t get it”. Maybe someone will be nice and explain to you, and you might be able to appreciate it. Or just don’t say anything and move on with your life.
Lots of people don’t understand Shakespeare, but that doesn’t make him “bad”. I’m not very good at measuring how “good” people are, but considering we are still reading Shakespeare’s plays 400+ years later, there must have been something good about it.
