Last night I tried to think up a list of topics to blog about today. It didn’t go too well.
I don’t know, I kind of feel like it would be cheating, even though I know it’s not. I did come up with about ten things, most of which I’ve already written about.
Well, when all else fails, look at the world around you. I look around and I see… my keyboard.
It’s a nice keyboard. It’s black. It has… keys. But it also has a lot of little buttons that I’ve never used. Pushing buttons is always fun, so let’s do that!
Here’s one that has a star on it and says “Favorites”. Let’s see… it does nothing. A ha, but if I open Internet Explorer, the Favorites sidebar pops up. Eh, not very useful, considering I’m a Firefox user.
Next we have “Home”. Let’s just save this post first, in case it actually decides to work this time… oh! Thinking ahead, eh? It opened a new window (in Firefox, too!) with my home page. Far out.
Then there’s a little play/pause button. Or rather, a sideways triangle, a slash, and two vertical lines.
How did that little symbol come to represent play/pause in the first place? Kinda weird when you think about it. It’s not really something you do think about. I don’t know if it’s a universal symbol or anything, so I won’t say it’s universal, but but it is widely recognized, non? Weird.
And that little button, as well as the stop square, does nothing. But what’s this? A music note with a label saying “media”?
Oh. Windows Media Player.
I’m an iTunes user, meself. Too bad, really.
Let’s skip over the rest of the media controls and go to “E-Mail”. Oh look, it’s Outlook! No surprise there. But for once, useful for me. Well, not so much after I’ve started to use Gmail. Slowly been replacing all the Microsoft programs.
And finally, we have “Messenger”. Anyone want to take a stab at what this does? Hmm? Why… nothing, actually. Though I’d assume MSN Messenger should pop up, which again would be useful, if I actually used it. Though yes, MSN Messenger is my instant message program of choice, since all my friends use it, but I don’t much talk to my friends.
Hey, look at this! A tiny button with a calculator on it. Probably the only one I’ve actually ever used, and it’s the smallest one there. Huh.
Conclusion: the buttons look cool, but are not very useful. The end.
Is it just me, or did this half hour go really slow?
