University -> Career -> Support yourself
I know. My end goal is to be able to earn enough money to support myself. That is the number one priority. That is all I really need.
My number one want is a job that I enjoy. My number two want is a job where I make a bazillion dollars, but that’s a very far second. I really just need enough to support myself and I really just want to be able to enjoy myself while doing it.
I don’t know what this career will be yet, but working backwards, to get to a career where I enjoy myself, I think I should be taking courses that I enjoy in university.
I have no intention to take “bird” courses just because they are fun and easy. I’m not going to choose “The History of the Beatles” where I’m guaranteed a spectacular mark over “Advanced Programming” where the course is actually challenging and, more importantly, useful. I fully understand that knowing what is being said in the outro to “I Am The Walrus” will not get me a job anywhere, and I have no intention to waste my time and money learning this.
I can still enjoy myself while learning. A lot of people don’t think this is possible, but I’m confident that it is. Take my eLearning computer science course this year, for example. Several times I have gotten pretty frustrated, but once I’ve figured out what I’m doing wrong, I can continue writing the program, and it’s really rewarding when it actually works. Once I get the big picture, debugging and adding extra little features and calculations is fun. Maybe for a lot of people, it isn’t. But for me, for some crazy reason, I find programming enjoyable. I find the Beatles enjoyable too, but taking a course about one of these things in university can be both enjoyable and useful.
This is what I want: a course that will led me to a feasible, enjoyable job opportunity upon graduation.
