So many people I knew in high school –
Okay, okay. So I haven’t really talked to these people since then. I don’t really know what anyone is up to. I get bits and pieces from their Facebook, from rare conversations. I’m drawing a big picture from all these little pieces and that’s probably not a good idea. I, however, think people are pretty predictable and thus I like to make grand assumptions about them, so that I shall do.
A lot of them have changed. “University/college changed my life”. An understandable statement — but a bit early, isn’t it? Most of the people I know/knew are only in their first year. You can’t really have changed that much already?
People who were quiet are now loud, people who were nerds are now partiers, everyone’s coming out of their shell. And yes, we’re all 19 now. That can indeed play a role in these changes. Not that anyone cared if they weren’t old enough before, but when the government says “you can now drink alcohol!”, you’re gonna do it.
I just can’t see how a little change of location, a little more freedom, a few new people can cause that much of a shift in personality.
But then I realize, well yeah. It can.
These people who are being so changed by this new experience are simply growing up. I never noticed this happening to me here because I was already grown up.
Back in high school, I already knew who I was. Everybody else didn’t. They’re just figuring it out now.
